how tanning affects your health

Warm weather is approaching and we are all thinking about the same thing: that sun-kissed look we covet so much. Getting a tan is easy, but it’s not always easy to achieve it safely. There are a couple of important things to keep in mind throughout the tanning season and there is an excellent, safe alternative to basking in the sun and tanning beds.

Tanning beds cause quick killing cancer. Period
. UV radiation from tanning beds and long-term sun exposure causes DNA mutations. These mutations can lead to skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form and increasingly more common in young adults. The risk of getting melanoma increases by 74% if you use tanning beds before the age of 35. Every twenty minutes in a tanning bed is equivalent to 200 minutes unprotected in natural sunlight.

“But I just want a base tan so I don’t burn.”

Even the darkest skin tones containing the highest count of melanin, are only naturally protected by an SPF of 4. This is not enough protection for any skin. SPF 30 re-applied as directed is the minimal requirement to protect against harmful rays. Plus, no one is exempt from the esthetic damage caused by sun exposure including fine lines, wrinkles, loss of tone, and hyper-pigmentation. I’ve seen many skins that “don’t need” sunscreen have the elasticity of those twenty years older than them or more.

“I need vitamin D.”

Vitamin D by sun exposure is only recommended with arm or leg exposure for a maximum time of 10 minutes a day. There are much safer ways to get your daily recommended dose of Vitamin D.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer moved the rank of indoor tanning devices to the highest cancer risk category, calling it “carcinogenic to humans.” Present day, there are more cases of skin cancer from tanning beds than lung cancer from cigarettes.  With skin cancer becoming more prevalent and melanoma killing almost 10,000 people in the US per year, it is imperative that we educate ourselves and find a safe alternative.  You will pay for your tan sooner or later whether it’s minor esthetic concerns, irreversible skin damage, your health, or your life. So now what?

You can choose our classic customized option which leaves you with a beautiful bronzed look that takes 8 hours to develop, or our express option which you can shower off much sooner!

Airbrush tanning is an excellent alternative to achieving your glow for the summer season, an event, or whenever you need that pick-me-up. An airbrush tan is not a form of SPF. You will still need to wear sunscreen to protect against burning and cellular mutation. Your airbrush tan will not stain your clothing, cause breakouts, or turn orange. Practice “safe sun” this year and enjoy the experience of an airbrush tan!
