spotlight on the haute mess

Wanted to share my blogger spotlight interview article with The Haute Mess! They featured me for May as the “Boston bred blogger and Jill-of-all-trades who is making bagels a thing.” And even Miss Ashley Tisdale commented that I was boss. Yassss!

Meet Boston-Bred Blogger And Jill-of-all-Trades

When you’re in your 20s, you hustle.

Something about life just ignites your little being that sparks a fuel for you to be something big.

When you’re in your 20s, hunger strikes.

Even an entire box of pizza won’t leave you content (metaphorically speaking, of course).

When you’re in your 20s, you WANT. IT. ALL.

This month’s THM boss babe, Erika Lauren, is proof of just that. From European travels, to running her own blog and other boss babe ventures, like contributing to The Haute Mess, we’re heart-eyes-ing over Erika’s hunger for more.

On her roots

I was born and lived in a city north of Boston where the culture is rich and the food is wicked good but, my hatred for baseball and lobster rolls got me kicked out last year. So I took on the opportunity of living in southern colonial America where my sister is. It’s temporary and though I miss Boston, I’m open to new adventures, moving around, and living different micro lives instead of crumbling under the pressure to choose one set path. Deciding to move was the most freeing decision I’ve ever made.

On her career

As a teen I worked three jobs at once in a struggle to keep up with my own high-maintenance demands. (I wasn’t letting mom pull my highlights through a cap ANYMORE!) Somewhere between spit up and pancake syrup I decided that no matter what it took I was going to get a job I actually liked, that I could walk into each day with style and be taken seriously. I simultaneously got a degree in writing and a license in Esthetics. I recently started pursuing writing seriously but I’ve been a full time Esthetician and Makeup Artist since 2007.

On blogging

I’ve been writing since I could hold a crayon and won my first few contests at ages 7-13 for poetry. I was a weird child that spoke in prose and hand delivered love poems to the boys I crushed on. I always wanted to be an editor for a magazine and tried starting my own when I was 11 called “The Four One One”. Writing was an on-and-off again relationship until I joined The Haute Mess team last year and since then I launched my blog, It Begins With A Bagel: a literary smörgåsbord. I’m published on a few other sites like Narrative.ly and even started a book on inner strength and survival. My writing process is bizarre, everything is born in “Notes” on my phone, (I’m writing this in Notes now), when it’s good enough I send it to Word, and then it leaves the nest in my outbox as pitches to editors. When my pitches are accepted it’s wonderful but rejections motivate me to be better.

Currently I’m wrapping up my twenties with discovery, mentally and physically. I just got back from visiting France where I would love to live someday. I want to start a new career that will travel with me as I continue my micro life series, and I eventually hope to make that transition to the editorial world. In the meantime I’m enjoying my pups, beautifying the public, writing, eating all my boyfriend’s great cooking while he stays fit, assisting my friends in their business ventures, collecting Rosé corks, and co-hosting a new podcast called Pretty Inappropriate. It’s all about setting goals, not making plans, and being open to what may come.

Age: 28
Sign: Virgo
Location: Virginia

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Nothing will ruin your twenties more than thinking you should have your life together already.”

What’s your hidden talent(s)?

Knife throwing. I love it. I found out that I am freakishly good at it after watching the first Hunger Games and trying it in my yard.

3 things you always have in your bag?

Eyelash glue, doggy barrettes, and a black hole that sucks up the things I never have in my bag, like my ID and my keys.

One fashion piece you can’t live without?

Big sunglasses

Finish this sentence: “I’m a haute mess because: ___________________.”

I refuse to brush my hair with a real brush because it hurts and I mentally can’t join the human race until noon.
